Jan 11th 2010 - Abstracting from Buildings Plants or Trees
There will be the opportunity of working on a large scale for those who wish. We will be looking at the works of Richard Diebenkorn [American Abstract Painter, 1922-1993], Paul Klee and Lyonel Feininger. We will have lots of starting point material for you to use but do bring your own drawings or photographs if you wish.

Feb 8th - Developing Texture with Knife-painting and Brushwork
If you have always wanted to work with rich paint textures then this is your opportunity to try! Please bring either oils or acrylics and a reasonable size board to paint on. If, you have a landscape drawing or photograph that you would like to develop in this style then please bring it along. There will be plenty of interesting images to work from. You will need a range of stiffer flat brushes (hoghair) and/or two or three pointed painting knives of different sizes and shapes. A good size palette for mixing your colours is important.

March 8th - Creating Feeling and Mood with Colour
The day will provide a series of structured exercises to build your skills and confidence in colour strategies for your paintings. We will work on a small scale and you will produce two paintings during the day. We will examine how a range of artists have used colour very differently and for what purpose. Artists such as Vuillard, Morandi, Cassatt, Gwen John and Palmer used colour that was often restricted or harmonious, whilst others, such as Matisse and Braque made use of strong contrasting colour. We will investigate how this was done and why. Suitable media would be acrylics, gouache, watercolours and pastels and the focus will be landscape or interiors.

April 26th - Techniques for Drawing and Mixed Media
The objectives for this day will be to develop confidence in exploring marks and textures that can develop and enhance your work. We will look at ways of combining materials with paint in order to achieve texture and colour effects. We will explore the working methods of such artists as Kurt Jackson, Shirley Trevena, Hockney and Graham Sutherland. You will need to bring a couple of pieces of A1 or A2 paper or card on which to work and a wide range of media such as acrylics, inks, coloured pencils, pastels and / or oil based crayons. The focus for our work will be imaginative development of landscapes, interiors or still life.

May 10th - Putting on the Style
The workshop will begin by looking carefully at the work of highly distinctive artists analyzing how they apply their personal styles to making paintings. We will be hoping to achieve paintings that are jewel like and glow with rich colour. You may choose any media e.g. pastels, watercolour acrylics or mixed media. If you have any metallic colours this may be a good opportunity to use them! The influences for this workshop will be artists such as Friedensreich Hundertwasser, Howard Hodgkin, Franz Marc and Gustav Klimt. The themes for this workshop will be either buildings, trees, people or landscapes. Visual resources will be provided but if you have photographs to work with please bring them along. We suggest you work small to medium scale.

Jun 14th - Using Nature as a Starting Point for Abstraction, Stylization and Accurate Observation
We will provide a range of interesting natural objects such as plants, butterflies, driftwood and shells as the focus for your work. The workshop will give opportunities to work from observation and/or in a more expressive or abstract manner. We will draw inspiration from such artists as William Morris, Charles Rennie Mackintosh and Georgia O'Keefe. We will also provide a range of related images to extend ideas. Bring resources of your own choice if you wish. You will need some drawing materials together with watercolours, acrylics, gouache or pastels.

Jul 12th - Painting Land, Sea and Sky with Atmosphere
The focus for this workshop will be ways of developing paintings to give real atmosphere and feeling. We will include colour ideas and stylistic suggestions that can support your own work. We will look at a wide range of artists, such as Turner, Cezanne, Vlamink, Seago, Winslow Homer and Van Gogh who have created wonderful atmosphere and mood in their paintings. We will be analyzing how you can make use of the study of such artists’ work to improve your own paintings. You can use any media you wish and any scale of work that you prefer.
