The Devon Summer Art School is an intensive four-day course designed to support artists with a wide range of experience from beginner to the very competent. Themes for exploration during the course will be still-life, figures, flowers and landscapes. There are lectures and slide presentations to stimulate you to try new and challenging directions for your work.

We have decided to return to the venue in Littleham on the outskirts of Exmouth for this year's Summer School. Here, there is parking right outside the Centre which has all the usual facilities together with appropriate disabled facilities. We have satisfactory light for painting in comfort. There is also a kitchen where we can prepare drinks. You will need to bring a packed lunch each day; but tea, coffee and biscuits etc will be provided for you.

The course will be four days long due to the availability of the room. You will have facilities of tables and chairs and some studio easels if I am able to hire them. You will also be able to leave work and equipment in the room overnight if you wish.

The Summer School has a daily programme that starts at 10am each day and finishes at 4.00pm. The programme for the course will consist of workshops related to a wide range of visual starting points and talks about painting. You will have the choice of working indoors or outside in the nearby landscape as the weather permits. Central to the week will be the challenge of trying ideas inspired by presentations on Scottish Colourists and the Newlyn & St Ives painters. We will also make reference to many Post-Impressionists and some modern abstract still life artists.

If you have attended before, you will know that whilst we work hard we also have an enjoyable time (holiday?) in each others' company. We will seek to challenge your ideas and stimulate you to achieve work of quality at whatever stage you may be, a beginner or experienced painter! If you live a long way from Exmouth we can help you to find B&Bs.

The choice of media is yours. We will be happy to tutor you in oils, water-colour, pastels or acrylics and we put a particular emphasis on developing your skills and confidence in drawing. There will be lectures, demonstrations of some techniques and individual and group critiques of the work in progress. The Summer School is still, we believe, one of the best value courses available where you will be taught by highly trained expert staff who take real interest in you and your work.

If you decide to join us you should bring with you a range of colours and materials with which you wish to work. Bring painting boards or paper depending on which media you wish to use. We hope to have some studio easels and tables, together with good space in which to work but do bring a sketching easel with you as we may move outdoors when the weather is good. We advise you to book early as places are limited. The course usually fills quickly and we need to get an early idea of numbers. To be sure of a place, please send your deposit of £30 to the following address as soon as possible.
