These excellent painting days provide well-structured workshops that will help you to build your confidence and skills in painting and drawing. Do not worry if you are a beginner as tuition is individual! Each day begins with an illustrated talk / presentation that sets out the objectives of the day. You can work in any media and expect to be given expert tuition. A 'Painting Monday' Workshop costs £46 for the day. The price includes tuition, morning coffee, and an excellent two-course lunch in the restaurant and a cup of tea in the afternoon. Courses start at 10am and finish at 4.30pm. September 15th 2008 - Pushing the Boundaries with Acrylics This workshop will provide an opportunity to investigate the characteristics of acrylics. We will be using structured exercises to demonstrate the versatility of this popular medium. Also if you have always wanted to explore impasto and textural effects including working with a painting knife, then this is your opportunity to try! Please bring your acrylics, some impasto paste and a reasonable size board to paint on. The theme for the day will be landscape and there will be plenty of interesting images to work from. If you have drawings or photographs that you would like to develop for your paintings then please bring them along. You will need two or three pointed painting knives of different sizes and shapes plus a good size palette for mixing, if you wish to work in a textural style. October 13th 2008 - Imaginative and creative ways to design for Stylized Painting The influences for this workshop will be artists such as Friedensreich Hundertwasser, Howard Hodgkin or Gustav Klimt. The workshop will begin by looking carefully at the work of these highly distinctive artists analysing how they apply their personal styles to making paintings. We will be hoping to achieve paintings that are jewel like and glow with rich colour. You may choose any media e.g. pastels, watercolour acrylics or mixed media. If you have any metallic colours this may be a good opportunity to use them! The themes for this workshop will be either buildings, trees, people or landscapes. Visual resources will be provided but if you have photographs to work with please bring them along. We suggest you work small to medium scale. November 10th 2008 - Painting on a Small Scale The theme for this workshop will be a choice of either interiors or still life. We look at some of the artists of the Glasgow School of Art and analyse how they achieved wonderful colour and light in their work. We will show you how to get the best from careful small scale compositions and how to use your brushes to capture both detail and atmosphere. We suggest appropriate media could be either, acrylics, gouache, watercolour or mixed media. This may be an appropriate course for you to try using a square format for your paper or board. We will also be examining ways of presenting small paintings for exhibition. We suggest two boards or paper up to 12" x 12" square. December 15th 2008 - Making Abstracts from looking at Still Life This workshop will be using influences of the Cubists principally Braque and Picasso. We will make some careful analysis of how these artists worked then we will help you to design your own ‘cubist’ still life painting. We will also be using still life objects to prepare drawings for paintings. We will have a strong focus on developing strong colour and texture in the work.. We suggest the most appropriate media for the day are acrylics, pastels, gouache or mixed media. We also suggest that you work fairly large A2 or A1. January 12th 2009 - Looking and Drawing (Raising skills and Techniques) Following our workshop the Big Draw we have decided to run a further course that will extend your range of drawing techniques. The objectives for this day will be to encourage confidence in drawing and the exploration of mixed-media surfaces, marks and textures. that can make your work more exciting. Bring a dip pen, black Indian ink and a few colours of waterproof inks, acrylics, oil pastels, water-colours if you have them and a couple of large sheets, of white card or strong paper. We will be using a range of natural and made objects to provide the focus for your work. February 16th 2009 - Techniques with Collage and Mixed Media The objectives for this day will be to develop confidence in exploring mixed-media surfaces, marks and textures that can transform your paintings. We will look at ways of combining collage with paint in order to achieve texture and colour effects. You will need to bring a couple of pieces of A1 or A2 paper or card on which to work and a wide range of media such as acrylics, inks, coloured pencils, pastels and / or oil based crayons.
