"I have always been entranced with the intricate forms and types of lichen, both as subjects in their own right and as highly significant structures that span time and indicate the presence of pollution. I also sense that they possess that air of mystery that keeps my work so involved with natural subjects. The Lichen Series began a few years ago with a very detailed, very small drawing in my sketchbook and the sudden wish to transform it into a much larger oil painting in which the scale of the lichen would be dramatically increased
The paintings range from closely observed subjects to more personal interpretations of the form, scale and colour of Dartmoor lichens. Although each painting began with reference to pieces of lichen or a previous drawing I began to depend less on naturalistic interpretation but more on my response to shapes, mood and the paint itself."
